Foundation for Philippine Progress, Inc. Appeals for Support Following Typhoon Usman aka the “Christmas Typhoon”

Portland, OR — As another super typhoon advanced towards the Philippines during the holidays, Foundation for Philippine Progress, Inc. appeals to all concerned individuals and organizations in the United States for donations to help survivors of Typhoon Usman, which hit Philippine waters on December 25, 2018 and gathered strength as it moved slowly before making landfall. On December 29, Tropical Depression "Usman" made landfall in the vicinity of Borongan, Eastern Samar at 6:00am, affecting more than 700,000 people, according to reports from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

As of January 10, over 1,900 homes are reportedly destroyed and more than 15,000 are damaged. 85 were killed, while 200,000 people are in temporary shelters. According to our partner organization Leyte Center for Development, Inc. in Eastern Visayas, the towns they are focusing on helping are among the top 10 poorest in Northern Samar. These communities are also far and challenging to reach, which is the reason that it seldom gets sufficient aid.

“We all know the magnitude of devastation a tropical cyclone like Typhoon Usman could bring. The urgency for relief monetary donations is not to be understated as this typhoon has already brought life-threatening winds, storm surges, and flash floods. Our partner organizations have reported this to be the worst flooding within the past 30 years,” said Dr. Alma Trinidad, Board President of Foundation for Philippine Progress, Inc. The Foundation calls on the community members of Portland and other cities in the U.S. to come together in the spirit of kindness and camaraderie to help the underserved communities in the Philippines that are in desperate need of our support.

Donations are highly encouraged through the online donation link available at www.philippineprogress.org or through checks mailed to the Foundation for Philippine Progress, Inc. at 1137 SW Broadway, Portland, OR, 97205.
